I wanted to capture the spirit of how time affects living things in the rainforest. I found a beautiful and poetic source of inspiration. The decaying leaves with missing sections from the rainforest on Mahe had fascinating textures and patterns. It's incredible how nature, in all its stages, can spark creativity and bring depth to art. I thought by capturing the essence of those leaves and translating that into the work would add an organic and natural element that can resonate deeply with the viewer.
Summary of comments when this piece was exhibited. I resonate deeply with this piece. The artistic representation is strikingly clear, and the colours are seamlessly blended. The ferns and leaves are easily recognizable. I truly enjoy this one. The shapes and patterns in the glass remind me of tropical leaves and ferns found in our forests. It inspires evolving thoughts and a sense of freedom. The asymmetry and colours evoke a positive feeling in me. The piece's clarity and lack of symmetry provide a peaceful and calming sensation, reminiscent of natural surroundings. It exudes a fresh, exotic, jungle atmosphere.
The success of this piece lies in the inclusions, which beautifully capture the burnt, faded crispness of the leaf. The use of sawdust adds a touch of realism to the artwork, causing the inclusions to optically blend when viewed from a distance. This thoughtful combination of elements enhances the overall impact, bringing a sense of authenticity and depth to the piece. It's remarkable how such intricate details can create a powerful and immersive experience for the viewer.
Trapunto Art Glass uses the secretly guarded processes used by the Mesopotamians (1650BC.) to make glass vessels which contained expensive perfumes for the courts of the rich and powerful, and also for use in religious ceremonies. It is said to have mystical qualities and when combined with the Trapunto textile manipulation technique used in Medieval Times (1450AD.) an art form like no other is produced - ones which cannot be copied, or mass produced.
Exhibition comments show that Trapunto Art Glass results in a very special personal experience often referred to as spiritual, tranquil or nostalgic thus relaxing the viewer and stimulating the imagination. Each piece of Trapunto Art Glass can take up to 3 months to complete and involves over 50 separate processes and is made to the highest quality standards often using precise hand dyed colour silks to create the experience. Inserted in each piece of Trapunto Art Glass is a hand stamped copper token indicating its uniqueness, providence and safeguarding investment.
