It was my first holiday in the tropics. Everything seemed so different compared to previous European holidays. The sun was so fierce, the beaches were white sand and the colours of the sea were a mixture of blues and greens. I returned to the Island in April 2000 for a personal art study trip taking photographs and making sketches in preparation for my school work. I recall on one day a storm occurred resulting in the whole island being overcast with dark grey skies and noticing how the sea changed colour to a kaleidoscope of dark blues. On returning in 2008 the blueness of the sea was incredible, several of the wooden shacks had been painted with bright colours such as yellow, violet and pink which the sunlight intensified. Compared to the Seychelles there seemed more open space and the blue sky was always noticeable combining with the sunlight to give a sense of crispness to any view. The sense of place includes colour, one of joy, fun and atmosphere that is laid back and slow in pace with the people being just as friendly outside of the hotel grounds as within them. I just love it. I love blue for a starters. I mean that to me is just the ocean. You’ve got the greens and the turquoise all the different colours of the ocean. And I can sit and stare at that all day. I really could. This one just steals the show. And I use to be a sailor on the shipping docks on these tropical islands so the sea means a lot to me and this is just, well, spot on. You can really get in the picture, you know, with your head. And again the detail in each bit it actually looks like you can see the wave inside of each one to give that sort of flowing effect. I love the way you have overlapped it, you know like here, where it actually goes behind. You can see all the individual waves coming through. It really is a work of art. A piece of art, work of art. Known for its crystal-clear waters, powdery sands, and vibrant marine life, I could see how it would be an ideal muse for a design. I do love this one. This is just how it looked in St Thomas, called Megan’s Bay. What I mean is the beach was very narrow and it was literally palm trees, 4 foot, sea. All away around the whole of the bay and I looked at that and just thought that’s what it reminds me of because you use to walk through the trees, through the palms to come out the other side and the sea was there with a tiny strip of sand. And I love the way you’ve done it as if it’s coming onto the shore going lighter, and lighter and lighter, you know from the depth of the ocean. I just love it yeah. The attention to detail. You go near them and it’s just on another level ain’t it. From a distance then you go straight up. Fantastic, absolutely fantastic. Yeah I would say soft because of the textiles and the smoothness of the glass. I’m going for this one because I like the soft blending of the blues of the sea. And also I like the contrasting dimensional planes of the trees, and the beach and the sea. It reminds me of the Caribbean. It’s the connection between my memories and the island of Barbados. Because it reminds me of the western side of Barbados where I’ve been. The sea is so calm and the sea colours are beautiful. You seem to have captured that really well. All the colours are so Caribbean like. And how the light shines through the leaves. I feel peaceful and tranquillity which is affecting me on an inner level like no other art work has done before. Amazing. I don’t see the glass at all. In fact I don’t see the textiles either. I just see a lovely piece of art work with amazing pictorial qualities. But softness I suppose. This one was personally pleasing to me. I then saw the texture of the glass - which I thought was a nice treat as you don’t expect it to be glass. Also makes me think maybe that’s what makes the colour so rich, even though technically they are cold colours used (although the yellows warm it up a bit) - in a painting or embroidery the colour may be flat or matt looking. Exhibition Comments: Because of the beautiful harmony between colours of its red frame, wooden border and mixture of blue, red and yellow and white of the glass parts inside the frame. I feel magnificence and glory as if I am looking at sunset beside the sea. I like this the best as it reminds me of reflections in the sea. It brings back many happy memories as I am a sailor and derive great pleasure from watching water especially as the sun goes down. This image appealed to me more than the all blue artwork as it reminds me of one of my most joyous experiences - that of standing in the ocean while looking at the sun being swallowed up by the huge expanse of water in front of me. When looking at the artwork I feel it is full of a violent drama. It is much more passionate and darker in its nature than most representations of a sunset that I have seen or imagined. It seems to point to the essence of power that we cannot capture or contain but merely look at in wonder. There is a balance between heat and cold, ying and yang. The sun rises, or sets, over the sea. This one I was drawn to first in the room. Love the colours. So vibrant and eye catching. It reminds me of the Caribbean with all the fancy fabrics and flowers that are in their hair. Is that bananas I see? It’s good because you don’t notice some things until you get up really close and look. I mean I didn’t see that bird there until now. I really like the frame as well. Works perfectly with the colours in the glass. Also the fabrics, you can tell you have spent ages dying them and sorting out what colours work and what don’t because the result is this amazing mixture and blends of colour. You certainly have a knack for colour mixing. It makes me feel happy and joyous. I just want to touch it. I like the sparkle of the metallic threads and all the small bits in it as well. Don’t think its hard because of the lights. The lights make it soft. I know my answer straight away. It’s this one. I noticed it as soon as I came in. The shuttle houses and the stamp that you have put in here makes it so individual. Makes you think of Barbados really. The colours are fantastic. And it does with all the flowers in it transports me back there. So that question was easy. Yeah yes, transports me straight back to Barbados, just the colours and that more than anything else. Because you can see all the individual things in it. I mean you have obviously thought very carefully about each single subject that you have put in there down to the chickens to the you know flowers. It’s fantastic, unbelievable. Oh I just want to go on holiday back there. I want to get on a flight tomorrow. Obviously it makes me feel really happy because of the colours more than anything else but it does it just makes me want to go back to Barbados. I would say softness actually.
